Ep 5: Turning Tragedy Into Purpose, A Mama's Story with Leslie Bangamba

Life can change in an instant.

In this episode of She Starts Now, I sat down with Leslie Bangamba to talk about the day that changed the trajectory of her life. She shares how she took a tragic experience in her life and turned it into her life’s purpose.

Leslie Bangamba is a mother turned Child Safety Advocate and Content Creator after a life-altering traumatic incident involving her then eighteen-month-old daughter Amélie who nearly died from ingesting a lithium coin battery.

As a digital storyteller and an official partner with Duracell, she’s on a mission to use this tragic experience to educate others on how to stay battery safe and to prevent this from ever happening to another child.

She’s also the Writer and Executive Producer of the heart-moving documentary Amélie’s Second Chance and she’s determined to transform her pain into purpose and live with an attitude of gratitude by sprinkling joy on everyone she meets.

In This Episode, We Discuss:

  • Who Leslie was before she became a mom

  • The importance of being a safe landing place for your kids

  • The moment that changed everything for Leslie

  • How this experience changed Leslie’s view on courage and fear

  • Leslie’s “She Starts Now” moment

  • The momentum that happens when you just start

  • The impact of mom guilt

  • The ten minutes Leslie takes for herself every day

I hope you enjoyed this conversation with Leslie. I love how she took this devastating experience and made it her life’s work to get the word out about safe battery storage. She is proof that there’s nothing more powerful than a mom who gives a damn.
